PulpFest

There May Be Rooms at Other Inns, but . . .

13th World SF ConventionBack in March, we mentioned that in August, PulpFest will be sharing downtown Columbus with Matsuricon, a gathering of Japanese anime and pop culture enthusiasts. Although many of these fans will be coming for a single day, there will be a good number who will be staying at the Hyatt Regency as well as other hotels in downtown Columbus. At that time, we urged pulp fans to book their rooms as soon as possible. Around the middle of April, we reminded everyone about Matsuricon and once again reminded our members to book their rooms for this year’s PulpFest.

On Friday, June 11th, the Hyatt Regency Columbus informed us that all of their rooms are now booked for the period of August 13th through the 16th. Hotel management is attempting to work with other nearby hotels to locate overflow rooms and will inform PulpFest as to what is available. We want to thank those members who booked with the Hyatt as your stay at our host hotel helps to defray some of the convention’s substantial costs.

Thankfully, many people responded to our previous messages and have already placed their reservations. However, if you are planning to attend PulpFest in August and don’t yet have your room booked, please do so AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. There are certainly other hotels in Columbus, Ohio, but they are also likely to be filling up. So if you have yet to book a room for PulpFest 2015, we suggest that you search for a room at tripadvisor and similar websites as soon as you possibly can.

If you have any problems finding a room, please contact the convention’s chairperson, Jack Cullers, by writing to jack@pulpfest.com. You can also leave a message at the PulpFest phone line at 863-606-8878.

To thank those members who will  be staying three nights at our host hotel in the heart of ColumbusPulpFest is pleased to offer free early-bird privileges. That’s a very significant savings of at least $25! Only staff, dealers, and early-bird shoppers will be allowed into the dealers’ room from 6 to 10 PM on Thursday evening, August 13th. For those members who choose not to stay at the Hyatt, early-bird shopping will cost an additional $25 over the regular prepaid membership fee. Early-bird shopping privileges will cost $30 if paid for at the door.

PulpFest 2015 will also have a full slate of programming on Thursday, beginning at 8 PM. We’ll have presentations on sports pulps; detective and western heroes of the Thrilling Group of pulp magazines; The Shadow; and Street & Smith comics. We’ll also be screening a couple of films inspired by the work of horror master H. P. Lovecraft. Click the schedule button near the right end of our home page banner to learn more about our programming plans.

But free early-bird shopping and great programming isn’t the only reward you can receive by staying three nights at the Hyatt Regency. On Saturday, August 15th, PulpFest will be holding a drawing at the close of our annual business meeting for two full membership fee refunds. Two lucky convention attendees who prepay for their membership, book a room for three nights at our host hotel, and choose to attend our business meeting will receive full refunds of their membership fees to PulpFest 2015. You must provide proof of your stay at the Hyatt Regency Columbus and be present at the drawing to receive your free membership refund.

PulpFest 2015 will take place from August 13th through August 16th. Many thanks to everyone who booked their room early and chose The Hyatt for your trip to Columbus. Remember, your stay at our host hotel helps to defray some of the convention’s substantial costs. Plus, you’ve received a great deal on a room, free early-bird shopping, great programming, and a chance to win a full membership refund to PulpFest 2015. Congratulations on a great deal!

(It’s not quite the Hyatt Regency, nor is it Columbus, Ohio, but Frank R. Paul’s “atomic city” painting served as the cover art for the program book of the 13th World Science Fiction Convention, held in Cleveland, Ohio in 1955.)
