PulpFest

Make Friday the 13th Your Lucky Day

Amazing Stories 51-04Although the fellow on the ground seems to be in for a very bad Friday the 13th, your own doesn’t have to be nearly as bad! I’m not sure you can convince fallen gladiator of the fact, but if he realized that PulpFest 2016 would be starting in less than three months, he would certainly think that his luck had changed. Heck, he might even die happy!

Thursday, July 21 is fast approaching. That’s the date when “Summer’s AMAZING Pulp Con” will start at the Hyatt Regency and the Greater Columbus Convention Center in beautiful downtown Columbus, Ohio. The convention’s dealers’ room in the spacious Battelle South exhibition hall on the third floor of the convention center will be open from 6 PM to 9 PM for early-bird shopping. PulpFest members who will be staying at the Hyatt for three nights will be admitted free of charge during our early-bird hours. For those members who will unfortunately be staying elsewhere, early-bird privileges can be purchased for an additional $25 (if prepaid) or $30 (at the door). Click the registration button below our home page banner to learn how to register for the convention.

But wait! In addition to free early bird shopping on Thursday, we’ll be holding a drawing at the close of our annual business meeting, scheduled for 9:20 PM on Saturday, July 23. Two lucky convention attendees who prepay for their membership, book a room for three nights at our host hotel, and choose to attend our business meeting will receive free memberships to PulpFest 2017. You must provide proof of your stay at the Hyatt Regency Columbus and be present at the drawing to receive your prize.

The Hyatt Regency Columbus is an extremely popular venue for conventions, including the World Fantasy Convention, the highly popular Origins Game Fair, and Matsuricon, the anime convention held in mid-August. That’s just one of many reasons that PulpFest has selected the Hyatt as its host hotel. Click the hotel button below our home page banner to learn more about this great venue.

You can reserve a room at the Hyatt Regency at the special convention rate of $118 per night plus tax, which includes one free parking pass and free Wi-Fi, if you do so by June 30, 2016. Additional cars will be charged at the discounted rate of $10 overnight with in/out privileges. There are two ways to place a reservation. You can book a room online at https://aws.passkey.com/g/51320979 or by clicking the link on the PulpFest home page that reads “Book a Room Now.” You can also call 1-888-421-1442 to book a room by telephone. However, be sure to mention PulpFest 2016 to get the special convention rate. By staying at the Hyatt Regency, you’ll help to ensure the convention’s success. Given its popularity, we urge every member to book a hotel room for PulpFest 2016 as soon as possible. The earlier you place your room reservation for this year’s PulpFest, the greater chance you have of landing a room.

In addition to early bird shopping, PulpFest 2016 will also have a programming slate on Thursday, July 21, beginning at 9:10 PM. We’ll have presentations on two of the superheroes of the pulps — The Whisperer and The Skipper — as well as a presentation on the importance of H. G. Wells to the development of both science fiction and AMAZING STORIES, the first continuing science fiction magazine, ninety years old in 2016. Click the schedule button below our home page banner to learn more about our programming plans.

And don’t forget, you may even wind up being one of our lucky door prize winners.  Convention sponsor AbeBooks will be offering two hardcover copies of Mike Ashley’s SCIENCE FICTION REBELS, the fourth volume in the author’s History of the Science-Fiction Magazine as door prizes at this year’s PulpFest.

So what are you waiting for? Start planning now to attend PulpFest 2016 and join hundreds of pulp fiction fans at the pop-culture center of the universe. You’ll have a FANTASTIC time, especially if you’re planning to stay at the Hyatt Regency Columbus! We look forward to seeing you in July in beautiful, downtown Columbus.

(A native of Toledo, Ohio, Robert Gibson Jones began working as a commercial artist in the city of Chicago during the second decade of the twentieth century. His first known pulp magazine cover was the August 1942 issue of Ziff Davis’s FANTASTIC ADVENTURES. Over the next ten years, Jones contributed ninety front covers to FANTASTIC and its companion, AMAZING STORIES, including the April 1951 number. He also painted covers for the publisher’s MAMMOTH line of pulp magazines. His last known cover for the publisher is the December 1952 issue of FANTASTIC ADVENTURES. During the fifties, he contributed covers to OTHER WORLDS and UNIVERSE SCIENCE FICTION.)
