PulpFest

Saturday Night Auction Catalog

As we previewed on July 5 – 7 of this year, the Saturday Night Auction returns to PulpFest on July 29. It will begin shortly after 9 PM with the always entertaining John P. Gunnison of Adventure House serving as auctioneer. Assisting him will be Joseph Saines, a full-time proprietor of an antique toy shop and one of the leading dealers of antique toy soldiers. Joe will be returning to PulpFest after a few years’ absence.

The PulpFest 2017 auction will feature material from the estate of Woody Hagadish — a longtime collector and reader of books and pulps, as well as a regular attendee of Pulpcon — and the estate of  Larry Latham, who enjoyed a varied career in animation, film, TV, theater and teaching. Larry was also admired by the pulp community for his covers and illustrations for ECHOES, THE PULP COLLECTOR, PULP VAULT, and other fanzines. He also created the popular webcomic LOVECRAFT IS MISSING in 2009, which attracted many followers.

We’ll have a variety of both pulps and digests from such diverse genres as air war, science fiction, western, and the detective fields. Also included will be several premiums offered to readers of Street & Smith’s DOC SAVAGE and THE SHADOW MAGAZINE. Finally, there will be a number of Gnome Press, Shasta, and Avalon first edition hardcovers offered. We’ll also have copies of THE ARGOSY and THE ALL-STORY, a large number of issues of FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES and WESTERN STORY MAGAZINE, and a number of hero pulps, including the May 1934 issue of DOC SAVAGE, autographed by cover artist Walter Baumhofer.

You can see photographs of some of the material that will be offered at this year’s PulpFest auction by viewing our “Auction Highlights” posts of July 5 – 7. You can find them easily by clicking “The PulpFest Auction” button along the righthand side of our home page.

(A selection of spicy-style detective pulps will be featured as lot number 160 in the PulpFest 2017 Saturday Night Auction. Featured in the lot are the November 1942 issue of DETECTIVE SHORT STORIES — published by Red Circle, the forerunner to Marvel Comics — the September 1944 and February 1946 issues of PRIVATE DETECTIVE, plus the April 1945 issue of SUPER-DETECTIVE — all “Speed” magazines, published by Culture Publications, best known for SPICY DETECTIVE STORIES. Their publisher, Harry Donenfeld, is known primarily for being the owner of National Allied Publications, better known as DC Comics.)
