"I would place this year’s show as one of the very best I’ve ever attended, and I’ve been to almost all since the first one in 1972. I rank the 2010 PulpFest with the first Pulpcon…and the 1981 Cherry Hill event, where I scored over ten pulp cover paintings for an average price of $200 to $400 each….Fellow readers and collectors, this is not a convention to be missed. Start making plans for next year because we have to support this event with our attendance."
—Walker Martin, writing on the Yahoo newsgroup, PulpMags, on August 3, 2010.
As everyone who belongs to a pulp-related message board knows, the PulpFest committee works to keep such groups up to date with regular releases about the convention. Of course, the best way to stay informed about PulpFest is to subscribe to the convention’s email list. You can do that by visiting our home page and filling in the gray box near the right upper side of the page. It’s quick and easy. The committee also submits information about the convention to numerous event calendars including book show lists, convention calendars, Ohio and Columbus event calendars, and more.
Another way that the committee promotes the convention is through its Facebook site where at last count, the convention had nearly two hundred followers, more than any other pulp convention. Thus, the con’s Facebook site has proved to be a superb method to publicize "The Summer’s Great Pulp Con."
However, our efforts to promote PulpFest are not limited to cyberspace. Regular press releases, charting the show’s progress, are released to print outlets as well, and immediately prior to the con’s opening, the Columbus-based media—print and broadcast—are targeted in the interest of securing publicity and, through it, attracting walk-in trade. We have Mark Trost of F.I.L.M. Archives to thank for much of the "leg work" involved in this effort. Mark contacts the local newspapers, radio broadcasters, and television stations in the Columbus region to tell them about our convention.
Thanks to Mark’s efforts, PulpFest landed an article in the June 23, 2010 issue of ThisWeek, a community newspaper serving central Ohio. Additionally, PulpFest committee members Jack Cullers and Ed Hulse and Ohio State professor Eric Johnson were interviewed for a three-page article entitled "Amazing Tales in Columbus" that ran in the July 2010 issue of Ohio Magazine, a glossy, monthly periodical devoted to promoting travel opportunities in the state of Ohio.
By reaching out to a wide variety of media providers, the use of Internet news groups, print advertising, and outreach efforts through other conventions and book and paper shows, PulpFest has been able to draw a record crowds to Columbus over the last weekend of July. Rest assured, your PulpFest crew will continue to burn the midnight oil, working to make sure that PulpFest will continue to be a resounding success.
