In 2011, The Pulpster celebrates its 20th year of publication, a longstanding tradition cherished by attendees of summer pulp cons. Once again, editor Tony Davis will be issuing this tremendous program book at PulpFest to all members (including supporting members) of the summer’s "Great Pulp Con."
Like PulpFest 2010, one of the focal points of The Pulpster#19 was the 90th birthday of Black Mask. With that in mind, Bruce Stirling contributed a detailed analysis about the origins of hard-boiled crime fiction in "Whatever Happened to Three Gun Terry?," illustrated by Kenney Mencher.
The former editor of Singing Guns magazine, Dave Fox, set his sight on Frederick Faust with "Max Brand and Western Story Magazine: Year One," another ninety year anniversary in 2010, while PulpFest guest of honor, Bill Nolan, covered both anniversaries with "Spade, Destry and Dr. Kildare."
Other articles included Don Hutchison’s look at author David Goodis and John Locke’s overview of the career of Avenger writer Paul Ernst; Wayne Leighton offered a piece on L. Ron Hubbard and Theodore Sturgeon; Bill Lampkin of ThePulp.Net discussed "The Lost Doc Savage Movie," illustrated by Francescho Francavilla; longtime pulp historian Nick Carr answered ten questions about the pulps; and more.
Submissions
The Pulpster invites everyone to submit articles, art, and features related to the pulps and pulp history for use in the convention magazine. Pieces can be any length, from a paragraph to several pages, and on any topic relating to pulps and pulp collecting, pulp people and pulp characters. New material is preferred, or reprinted features of limited distribution that our readers may not have seen. Where possible, be sure to include photocopies of non-returnable prints of covers and/or illustrations to accompany your submission. While The Pulpster welcomes contributions, please note that we may not be able to accomadate each and every submission (and please, no top ten lists).
The deadline for reserving advertising space is the end of May 2011, but the prime spots sell quickly. Please feel free to send material as early as possible to help make production smoother.
Please send your written contributions to Tony Davis at 142 Jaimie Road, Thornhill, Ontario, Canada L4J 6A9. If possible, please also include a compact disc of your article, or better yet, e-mail it to eadavis@sympatico.ca.
