PulpFest Primer

PulpFest 2018 will begin on Thursday, July 26, at 3 PM, as our dealers begin to set up their displays for “Summer’s Great Pulp Con!” All members — dealers included — will be able to register for the convention from 4 to 8 PM, at the entrance to our dealers’ room at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry. To find our registration desk, please look for the large welcome banner, sponsored by AbeBooks.com, the online marketplace for books. AbeBooks not only has a passion for books, but a “passion for pulps” as well!

There will be early-bird shopping in the dealers’ room from 5:30 to 8:30 PM on Thursday. It’s free for loyal attendees who help to defray the convention’s costs by staying at our host hotel. The cost is $30 for those who stay elsewhere. Our evening programming will begin at 8:40 PM with a presentation by Sai Shankar on Leonard H. Nason — Soldier and Writer.

2018 marks the centennial of the armistice that ended the First World War. Also called “The War to End All Wars” and “The Great War.” PulpFest 2018 is honoring the 100th anniversary of the war’s end by focusing on the so-called “war pulps” and the depiction of war in popular culture.

We’ll also be celebrating the century mark of Grand Master of Science Fiction Philip José FarmerPulpFest and its associated convention — FarmerCon — will be saluting the acclaimed author of such works as ESCAPE FROM LOKITHE DARK HEART OF TIME, the classic Riverworld series, and more.

And don’t forget about our Guest of Honor — Joe Lansdale — the award-winning author of over forty novels and numerous short stories. The convention will also be hosting a rare gallery showing of original art by Mark Wheatley. Mark is a much acclaimed comic book artist, book illustrator, and graphic designer.

For those of you who have not yet registered for PulpFest 2018, Thursday will be an ideal time to do so. Full weekend memberships will cost $35 for those staying at the DoubleTree and $40 for those staying elsewhere. There will be no single-day memberships available for Thursday only. Children who are fifteen and younger and accompanied by a parent, will be admitted free of charge. Please visit our registration page for further details. Members will also be able to register for the convention on Friday morning, beginning at 9 PM, and at any time during regular dealers’ room hours. Single day memberships will be available for $20 for Friday or Saturday and $10 for Sunday. Advance registrations are no longer available. Our Paypal page was shut down at 10 PM on Monday night.

If you’re a member of Confluence — Pittsburgh’s long-running science fiction, fantasy and horror conference — and you’d like to attend PulpFest, just show your Confluence badge at our registration desk and you’ll get $10 off the price of our daily admission. PulpFest members who visit Confluence will receive the same discount. The two conventions are taking place over the same weekend! From 3 PM to 11 PM on Thursday, the dealers’ room will be open for exhibitors to set up their displays. At this point, we urge all of our dealers to take full advantage of our generous load-in and set-up period. Access to the dealers’ room for unloading will be through the ballroom back entrance and the nearby banquet dock. Although the focus of PulpFest is pulp magazines and related materials, digests, vintage paperbacks, men’s adventure and true crime magazines, first-edition hardcovers, series books, dime novels, original art, Big Little Books, B-movies, serials and related paper collectibles, old-time-radio shows, and Golden and Silver Age as well as pulp-related comic books and games are also allowed.

From 9 to 10 AM on Friday, July 27, the dealers’ room will be open only to dealers for set-up. It will open to all at 10 AM and remain open until 4:45 PM. Our afternoon programming will start at 12:30 PM with our New Fictioneers readings. There will be five authors reading from their works and fielding questions and comments during the afternoon. Times can be found on our programming schedule. A copy of the schedule will be on the back of your membership badge.

The convention’s evening programming will begin shortly before 7 PM, with PulpFest chairman Jack Cullers welcoming all attendees. Afterward, our FarmerCon 100 panelists will discuss 100 Years of Philip José Farmer: His Influence and Legacy. Presentations on men’s adventure magazines, the air war pulps, and artist John Fleming Gould round out the evening’s programming. At 10 PM, PulpFest will host the first of two, large estate auctions. On Saturday, July 28, the PulpFest dealers’ room will be open from 10 AM to 4:45 PM. Our afternoon programming will begin at 12:30 PM with our Farmer Jam. All members of FarmerCon 100 and PulpFest 2018 are welcome to read from their favorite Philip José Farmer work or reminisce about the author and his work.

Following the jam, our New Fictioneers readings will continue. There will be five authors reading from their works and fielding questions and comments until 4:30 PM.

From 5 to 6:30 PM, join your friends for our popular Saturday Night Dinner at ember & vine, in the heart of the DoubleTree Cranberry. It’s an opportunity to socialize after a hearty day of collecting in the PulpFest dealers’ room, prior to taking in the convention’s exceptional evening programming.

Saturday evening’s events will include the PulpFest 2018 business meeting, starting at 7 PM. Please try to attend as we will be discussing the future of PulpFestIt will be followed by the 2018 Munsey Award presentation. After the award ceremony, our Guest of Honor — award-winning author Joe R. Lansdale — will be interviewed by former journalist Tony Davis.

Presentations on the art of the war pulps and Philip José Farmer’s World War I writings round out the evening’s programming. At 10 PM, PulpFest will host the second of two, large estate auctions. The convention will also accept material for the auction from its members.

Any member of PulpFest 2018 can submit items to the auction. Your PulpFest badge number will be used as your auction bidder and/or seller number. We will begin taking consignments for the auction when our dealers’ room opens at 10 AM on both Friday and Saturday. The sooner you submit your consignments to our auction coordinator, Mike Chomko, the earlier it will come up for auction. Mike will be accepting material for our auction at his dealer’s tables. Watch for the auction banner and the Mike Chomko Books sign. All auction lots must be submitted by 1 PM on the day of the auction.

All lots submitted must have a minimum value of $20. All lots that do not receive a bid of $20 or more will be passed. If you plan to offer an auction lot with a reserve price, your reserve must be $50 or more. No lots with a reserve price of less than $50 will be accepted. PulpFest reserves the right to reject any auction material that is unlikely to meet our minimum bid or reserve price standards, as well as our content standards. The convention charges sellers 10% of the selling price for anything sold in the auction. Our auction rules are included with your registration packet.

THE PULPSTER #27On Sunday, July 29, the dealers’ room will be open to all members from 9 AM to 2 PM as our dealers pack up. If you are coming just for the day, please be aware that buying and selling opportunities may be limited. Admission to the convention for Sunday only will be $10, the cost of our annual program book, THE PULPSTER.

We are hoping that this year’s con will be our biggest and best yet. We have over sixty registered dealers and have been receiving member registrations every day, many from people who have never attended PulpFest before. If you’ve been thinking about attending, but have yet to pull the trigger, please book a room without delay. You can try calling 1-800-222-8733 to reach our host hotel. Champion Mojo Storyteller Joe R. Lansdale will be the Guest of Honor at PulpFest 2018. The author of over forty novels and numerous short stories, his work has appeared in national anthologies, magazines, and collections, as well as numerous foreign publications. He has also written for comics, television, film, newspapers, and Internet sites. His work has been collected in more than two dozen short-story collections, and he has edited or co-edited over a dozen anthologies. He has received the Edgar Award, ten Bram Stoker Awards, the Horror Writers Association Lifetime Achievement Award, the British Fantasy Award, the Inkpot Award for Contributions to Science Fiction and Fantasy, and many other awards.

PulpFest 2018 is honored to host a rare gallery showing of original art by Mark Wheatley. Held in conjunction with the convention, the event will showcase Wheatley’s extensive array of illustrations for the new Christopher Paul Carey novel, SWORDS AGAINST THE MOON MEN. Inducted into The Overstreet Hall of Fame in July 2017, Mark Wheatley holds the Eisner, Inkpot, Mucker, Gem and Speakeasy awards and nominations for the Harvey award and the Ignatz award. He is also a longtime pulp collector. Our art show banner was designed by William Lampkin, using one of Wheatley’s illustrations for SWORDS AGAINST THE MOON MEN.

With war raging in Europe, Hannes Bok contributed a telling cover concerning man’s inhumanity to man to the November 1941 issue of WEIRD TALES. Not long thereafter, the United States entered The Second World War. PulpFest 2018 will be marking the centennial of the armistice that ended World War I. Our Saturday afternoon programming will start at 12:30 PM with our New Fictioneers readings and a panel on “New Pulp Fiction.” It will be followed by an encore presentation by the Narada Radio Company

Saturday evening’s events will include the PulpFest 2017 business meeting, starting at 7 PM. All members of the convention are urged to attend. The 2017 Munsey Award — presented for service to the pulp community — will also be awarded on Saturday evening.

Other programming on Saturday night will include Our Guest of Honor presentation, featuring one of the few living pulp magazine artists, Gloria Stoll Karn. A Pittsburgh resident, Gloria will be joined by fine artist and pulp art historian David Saunders — winner of our 2016 Lamont Award — to discuss her freelance career in the pulps and much more. We’ll also have another presentation on the hardboiled dicks of the pulps.

Our evening will conclude with the annual PulpFest Saturday Night Auction. The convention will be offering about 150 lots of material from the collections of Woody Hagadish and Larry Latham. Included will be several premiums offered to readers of Street & Smith’s DOC SAVAGE and THE SHADOW MAGAZINE, as well as the May 1934 issue of DOC SAVAGE, autographed by cover artist Walter Baumhofer.

Robert Bloch’s “Return to the Sabbath” originally ran in the July 1938 issue of WEIRD TALES, featuring front cover art by the great pulp and fantasy artist, Virgil Finlay. The artist got his start during the Great Depression when he sent unsolicited illustrations to his favorite pulp magazine, WEIRD TALES. In addition to “The Unique Magazine,” he also contributed interior illustrations and covers to many other pulps and digests. Even today, Finlay remains one of the most highly regarded and collected artists in the fields of science fiction and fantasy.

DETECTIVE TALES was the number three title in Popular Publications’ detective pulp group. It was preceded by DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE and BLACK MASK, the pulp where the hardboiled detective genre originally took form. Between 1943 and 1945, Gloria Stoll Karn contributed six covers to DETECTIVE TALES, including the July 1945 number.

Six Writers of New Pulp

One of PulpFest‘s hallmarks has been its willingness to seek out and try new ideas. This was amply demonstrated by its decision in 2009 to present readings by “The New Fictioneers,” contemporary authors whose fiction is inspired by a love of the pulps. Since then, several other conventions have added a “New Pulp” track to their programming schedules.

PulpFest‘s dedication to new ideas and “New Pulp” continues with its annual panel moderated by Ron Fortier, a professional writer for over forty-five years. In 2007, Ron teamed up with illustrator Rob Davis and founded Airship 27 Productions. Together, they’ve built a home for new adventures featuring many of the pulp characters long remembered by our community. Ron’s own creation, the undead avenger known as Brother Bones — recently optioned as a motion picture — would certainly have been at home with Paul Ernst’s Doctor Satan in the pages of WEIRD TALES and Norvell Page’s The Spider. Ron has also penned the adventures of pulp heroes Captain Hazzard and the Domino Lady, as well as pop culture icons The Green Hornet, Popeye, and The Phantom.

On Saturday, July 28, Ron will be joined by five practitioners of contemporary pulp fiction for PulpFest‘s 2017 new pulp panel. The six authors will be discussing their writing experiences and why — of all the genres out there — they gravitated to pulp fiction.

Fred Adams, Jr. is a western Pennsylvania native who has enjoyed a lifelong love affair with horror, fantasy, and science fiction literature and films.  He holds a Ph.D. in American Literature from Duquesne University and recently retired from teaching in the English Department of Penn State University. He has published over fifty short stories in amateur and professional magazines, as well as hundreds of news features as a staff writer and sportswriter for newspapers. For Airship 27, Fred has written HITWOLF, SIX-GUN TERROR, and most recently, DEAD MAN’S MELODY.

John C. Bruening has been writing professionally for more than thirty years, first as a newspaper reporter and magazine editor and later as a marketing copywriter. As far back as he can remember, he has been a fan of comics, pulps, adventure fiction, vintage movies and serials, old-time radio, and any other form of heroic storytelling. His 2016 debut novel, THE MIDNIGHT GUARDIAN: HOUR OF DARKNESS, has been called “a Republic serial set to prose” and “the creative construct of a first-rate storyteller.” His most recent published work is “The Warrior and the Stone,” a short story appearing in RESTLESS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF MUMMY HORROR, a 2017 release from Flinch Books, where he is a publishing partner with Jim Beard. John is currently working on the next adventure of The Midnight Guardian. He lives near Cleveland, Ohio.

A life-long fan of science fiction and pulp fiction, Wayne Carey grew up reading Edgar Rice Burroughs, H. G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, H. Rider Haggard and all the grand masters. His reading guided him toward a career in science with degrees in biology and education and provided the desire to write from an early age. A love of classic and noir films also influences his writing. He is the author of THE NANON FACTOR, a young adult contemporary science fiction thriller that blends a murder mystery with cutting edge technology. His work has also appeared in a variety of anthologies such as LEGENDS OF NEW PULP FICTION. He and his wife live in the wilds of Central Pennsylvania with their three children, who provide a great deal of inspiration to the author.

Born to a father who was both a writer and a pulp enthusiast, Michael Maynard has been a fan of pulp all his life. Some of his favorites include the works of Dashiell Hammett, Sax Rohmer, John Buchan, and H. G. Wells. His favorite medium, however, is the cinema. Some of Michael’s favorite movies include such classics as THE MALTESE FALCON, DOUBLE INDEMNITY, and CASABLANCA. Michael’s first work of fiction was published in 2016: a short story that he wrote with his father. It was featured in the Airship 27 anthology, THE TOWERS OF METROPOLISHe intends to continue writing for the foreseeable future.

Charles Milhouse has been independently publishing since 1999, but really didn’t get into pulp until 2010. That was when he started to work on Captain Hawklin. He has written four books in the series and is currently outlining a fifth volume. He has published fourteen books, including the recently concluded, five-volume TALON’S EPIC. Charles is influenced by writers such as William F. (In case you’re wondering about the term “fictioneer,” most dictionaries place its origin during the early twenties. However, it was relatively commonplace in magazines between 1910 and 1920 and has been spotted in works dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. H. Bedford-Jones used it in a series of articles called “The Graduate Fictioneer,” originally published by AUTHOR & JOURNALIST in the early thirties. In 1932, a group of Wisconsin writers got together and called themselves “The Milwaukee Fictioneers.” At various times, Robert Bloch, Fredric Brown, August Derleth, Ralph Milne Farley, Lawrence Keating, Ray Palmer and Stanley Weinbaum were members of this group. In the late 30s, Popular Publications started Fictioneers, Inc., a pulp line that paid its authors half the going market rate of a penny a word. E. Hoffmann Price, soldier-of-fortune, and prolific pulp author, used the term in his memoirs from the pulp years, BOOK OF THE DEAD — FRIENDS OF YESTERYEAR: FICTIONEERS & OTHERS, published by Arkham House in 2001. Pulp historian and anthologist John Locke likewise used it in his non-fiction anthology PULP FICTIONEERS: ADVENTURES IN THE STORYTELLING BUSINESS, published by Adventure House in 2004.

In 1927, German filmmaker Fritz Lang brought to the screen one of the most ground-breaking science fiction films of all time. METROPOLIS is regarded as a classic and one of the first full-length movies in the genre. 2016 Post CardPulpFest 2016 will begin on Thursday, July 21, at 4 PM, as our dealers begin to erect their displays for “Summer’s AMAZING Pulp Con!” All members will be able to register for the convention from 4 to 8 PM, right outside our dealers’ room. There will be early-bird shopping in the dealers’ room from 6 to 9 PM for loyal attendees who help to defray the convention’s costs by staying three nights at our host hotel. The cost is $30 for those who stay elsewhere. Our full programming slate for the evening will begin around 9 PM with a look at The Skipper and The Whisperer, two pulp superheroes that debuted eighty years back in 1936. PulpFest will also be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of science fiction author H. G. Wells with a presentation by Garyn G. Wells War of the Worlds film posterFrom 4 PM to 11 PM on Thursday, the dealers’ room will be open for exhibitors to set up their displays. At this point, we urge all of our dealers to take full advantage of our generous load-in and set-up period. Since our dealers’ room will be located in the Greater Columbus Convention Center, unloading and loading for those selling at the convention will be at the center’s loading dock.

To reach the convention center’s loading dock, go north on High Street until you come to Warren Street.  Turn right on Warren and follow it to Summit Street. Summit becomes 3rd Street.  Stay on this street and pass the exit to I-670.  As soon as you pass the exit, you will see a sign that reads, “Right lane ends.” At this sign there is a ramp that goes off to the right.  Take this ramp and it curls around to the docks. The convention plans to have people there to help dealers unload.  After unloading, follow the ramp away from the dock and it takes you to the Chestnut Street garage area.

Remember that we’ll also be offering early-bird shopping in the dealers’ room from 6 to 9 PM on Thursday evening, an extra three hours of selling opportunities to people who are ready to buy!

Although the focus of PulpFest is pulp magazines and related materials, digests, vintage paperbacks, men’s adventure and true crime magazines, first-edition hardcovers, series books, dime novels, original art, Big Little Books, B-movies, serials and related paper collectibles, old-time-radio shows, and Golden and Silver Age as well as pulp-related comic books and games are also allowed.

Our afternoon programming will start at 1 PM with the first of our New Fictioneers readings. Our evening programming will begin shortly before 7 PM as PulpFest chairman Jack Cullers offers an official welcome to all attendees. Friday night’s programming will include our FarmerCon XI presentation which will feature a panel of writers who will discuss their collaborations with Grand Master of Science Fiction Philip José FarmerPulpFest favorite David Saunders starts off our celebration of the 120th anniversary of the first pulp magazine with “The Artists Who Make ARGOSY — 120 Years of Sensational Pulp Art;” our salute to the 90th anniversary of the first science fiction magazine continues when Joseph Coluccio, president of the Pittsburgh Area Fantasy and Science Fiction Club, explores the history of AMAZING STORIES during the pulp era; closing out the evening will be pulp historian Laurie Powers with a look at “LOVE STORY MAGAZINE and the Romance Pulp Phenomenon” and author and pop culture scholar Will Murray examining “WESTERN STORY MAGAZINE and the Evolution of the Pulp Western,” both part of PulpFest‘s remembrance of “A Century of the Specialty Pulp.”

On Saturday, July 23, the PulpFest dealers’ room will be open from 10 AM to 4:45 PM. This should allow plenty of time for people to prepare for people to prepare for our Saturday Night Dinner at Dick’s Last Resort, located at 343 North Front Street, just a few minutes’ walk from the Hyatt Regency Columbus in the Arena District. Our Saturday afternoon programming will start at 1 PM with our New Fictioneers readings. Afterward, Ron Fortier will moderate a New Pulp Fiction Panel on “Writing Hero Pulp.” It will be followed by a presentation on Anthony Tollin’s Sanctum Books featuring Mr. Tollin and Doc Savage author Will Murray.

Eldritch Horror

For pulp fans who like games, gaming fans who like pulps, or just people who like to have fun, PulpFest 2016 will be organizing a gaming track. Many of the themes found in the world of modern games resonate from the pulps and the stories published in those magazines. The PulpFest 2016 gaming track will begin at 10 AM on Saturday and last until 10 PM or thereabouts. All games will be set up in the Clark Room, located on the second floor of the Hyatt Regency. The only requirements to play games at PulpFest 2016 are a PulpFest membership, your imagination, and a desire to have a good time. So if you enjoy pulps and you enjoy games, PulpFest will be the place to be.

Saturday evening’s events will include the PulpFest 2016 Business Meeting. Two lucky PulpFest members who prepay for their membership, book a room for three nights at our host hotel, and choose to attend our business meeting will receive free memberships to PulpFest 2017. The 2016 Munsey Award — presented for service to the pulp community — will also be awarded on Saturday evening.

Argosy 43-01Other programming on Saturday night will include Our Guest of Honor presentation, featuring science fiction author and pulp fan Ted White. The editor emeritus of AMAZING STORIES, Mr. White will speak about his career, AMAZING STORIES, science fiction fandom, the pulps, and much, much more from 7:30 to 8:15 in the Union Rooms on the second floor of the Hyatt Regency. Pulp collector and scholar Doug Ellis — the co-founder of the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention — will also be on hand with a presentation on 120 Years of THE ARGOSY — The World’s First Pulp Magazine. Our evening will conclude with the annual PulpFest Saturday Night Auction.

Any member of PulpFest 2016 can submit items to the auction. Your PulpFest badge number will be used as your auction bidder and/or seller number. We will begin taking consignments for the auction when our dealers’ room opens at 10 AM. Barry will be accepting material for our auction near the entrance to the PulpFest dealers’ room. The sooner you submit your consignment to our auction coordinator, Barry Traylor, the more likely that it will be included in our auction. All auction lots must be submitted to Barry prior to 2 PM on Saturday, July 23.

All lots submitted must have a minimum value of $20. All lots that do not receive a bid of $20 or more will be passed. If you plan to offer an auction lot with a reserve price, your reserve must be $50 or more. No lots with a reserve price of less than $50 will be accepted. PulpFest reserves the right to reject any auction material that is unlikely to meet our minimum bid or reserve price standards as well as our content standards. Pulp magazines are not the only collectible that you’ll find at PulpFest. Although there will be thousands of pulp magazines for sale at the convention, other things will be available as well. Perhaps you’ll even find some of the artwork used to publicize George Pal’s THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, released in 1953. Unfortunately, the creator of the publicity art is not known.

In 1938, Ziff-Davis took over AMAZING STORIES and Ray Palmer became the magazine’s editor. Toward the end of his editorial reign, Palmer started “The Shaver Mystery,” a hoax involving an evil race that causes all of mankind’s problems from their home in underground caverns.  The June 1947 issue featuring cover art by Robert Gibson Jones was a special “Shaver Mystery” issue.

By popular demand, one of the PulpFest gaming tables will be running ELDRITCH HORROR, a board game featuring a band of investigators battling entities from the Cthulhu Mythos. From game designers Corey Konieczka  and Nikki Valens, it is published by Fantasy Flight Games and features cover art by Anders Finer.

One of the events that PulpFest will be saluting in 2016 will be the 120th anniversary of the first pulp magazine, THE ARGOSY. Originally founded by Frank A. Munsey in 1882 as a children’s weekly, it was converted to an all-fiction pulp magazine with its December 1896 number. During its long history, it was merged with other pulps, sold to Popular Publications, converted to a bedsheet magazine, and later, to a men’s adventure magazine. ARGOSY for January 1943 — with cover art by Peter Stevens — was one of the magazine’s last issues in the large pulp format. With its September 1943 issue, Popular Publications converted ARGOSY to a slick magazine.

It might not be quite as hospitable as beautiful downtown Columbus, Ohio, but according to pioneering science fiction illustrator Frank R. Paul, the city of Gatos on Ganymede — Jupiter’s largest moon — seemed to be a pretty hopping place! “Gatos, crater city of Ganymede is built at the magnetic pole, and  uses the magnetism of the planet for power, heat, light. Its people — tiger-like — are masters of its animal world, and ride giant lizards.” Frank Paul imagined life on Ganymede for the back cover to AMAZING STORIES for February 1942. This year, PulpFest will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the debut of AMAZING, the first continuing science fiction magazine.)

The AMAZING World of New Pulp

legends-new-pulp-coverOne of PulpFest‘s hallmarks has been its willingness to seek out and try new ideas. This was amply demonstrated by its decision in 2009 to present readings by “The New Fictioneers,” contemporary authors whose fiction is inspired by a love of the pulps. Since then, several other conventions have added a “New Pulp” track to their programming schedules.

PulpFest‘s dedication to new ideas and “New Pulp” continues with its annual panel moderated by Ron Fortier, a professional writer for over forty-five years. In 2007, Ron teamed up with illustrator Rob Davis to start Airship 27 Productions and built a home for new adventures featuring many of the pulp characters long remembered by our community. Ron’s own creation, the undead avenger known as Brother Bones, would certainly have been at home with Paul Ernst’s Doctor Satan in the pages of WEIRD TALES and Norvell Page’s The Spider. Ron has also penned the adventures of pulp heroes Captain Hazzard and the Domino Lady, as well as pop culture icons The Green Hornet and The Phantom.

In recent posts on this page, we’ve delved into the world of the specialty pulp, one of the themes of this year’s PulpFest.  The first of these — Street & Smith’s DETECTIVE STORY MAGAZINE premiered with its October 5, 1915 issue. The first pulp magazine successfully dedicated to one fiction genre, its success would lead to a proliferation of pulp magazines devoted to a single theme or genre, eventually culminating in the single-character pulp or hero pulp. For our 2016 “New Pulp” panel, Fortier has set his sights on the topic, “Writing the Pulp Hero.” He’ll be joined by four of the leading practitioners of contemporary pulp fiction.

Barbara Doran is a science fiction, fantasy, and mystery writer. Her father introduced her to the work of S. J. Perelman and P. G. Wodehouse, as well as Robert A. Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. Her earliest influences however, were pulp heroes such as Doc Savage and The Shadow. Another influence was The Green Hornet and Kato. These characters inspired Barbara’s first published work, CLAWS OF THE GOLDEN DRAGON, released in 2015 by Airship 27. Most recently, Barbara penned an adventure of Sinbad the Sailor for the fifth volume of Airship’s SINBAD — THE NEW ADVENTURES.

One of the founding members of the “New Pulp” movement, Win Scott Eckert is co-author (with Philip José Farmer) of the Wold Newton novel THE EVIL IN PEMBERLEY HOUSE, concerning the daughter of a certain bronze-skinned pulp hero, and its sequel, THE SCARLET JAGUAR. Win also edited and contributed to MYTHS FOR THE MODERN AGE: PHILIP JOSÉ FARMER’S WOLD NEWTON UNIVERSE, nominated for a Locus Award in 2007, and wrote the critically acclaimed CROSSOVERS: A SECRET CHRONOLOGY OF THE WORLD, published by Black Coat Press. He has also written tales featuring many adventure and pulp hero characters, including The Avenger, Captain Midnight, The Green Hornet, Honey West, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Sherlock Holmes, and Zorro. Win is currently finishing another incomplete Farmer manuscript, THE MONSTER ON HOLD, which will almost certainly debut at a future PulpFest. The latter features Philip José Farmer’s celebrated character, Doc Caliban.

Nominated for a Pulp Ark New Pulp Award as the 2016 “Best New Writer,” the work of Andy Fix has appeared in several anthologies of “New Pulp” fiction. His story, “Face to Face with Agent Loki,” appeared in the fifth volume of Airship 27’s celebrated SECRET AGENT X series. Andy also contributed a tale to LEGENDS OF NEW PULP FICTION, an all-new anthology to benefit new pulp publisher, editor, and writer Tommy Hancock, recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Andy is currently working on an air war story for Airship 27 and is featured on the Global Adventure Society Pulpcast, which “covers all aspects of Pulp Culture.”

Like Andy Fix, Jeff Fournier contributed to LEGENDS OF NEW PULP FICTION and is featured on the Global Adventure Society Pulpcast. And like Barbara Doran, Jeff has penned an adventure of Sinbad the Sailor. It appeared in the fourth volume of Airship’s SINBAD — THE NEW ADVENTURES.

It’s called new pulp – stories by modern writers who recreate the style of fiction that appeared in the pulp magazines of yore. Back then, the authors who labored for the rough paper industry liked to call themselves scribes, word-slingers, penny-a-worders, and, perhaps the most favored term of all, fictioneers. Join PulpFest as we celebrate today’s fictioneers — the authors writing the new pulp fiction.

If you’re a writer who has been inspired by the work of yarn-spinners such as Edgar Rice Burroughs, Raymond Chandler, Walt Coburn, Carroll John Daly, Lester Dent, Frederick Faust, Walter B. Gibson, Edmond Hamilton, Robert E. Howard, H. Bedford-Jones, Henry Kuttner, H. P. Lovecraft, Norvell Page, Clark Ashton Smith, Jack Williamson, and countless others who churned out commercial fiction for the pulp market, PulpFest is looking for you!

Every year since 2009, we’ve featured readings by some of the best writers of today’s pulp fiction. Jason Scott Aiken, Jim Beard, Christopher Paul Carey, Win Scott Eckert, Ron Fortier, William Patrick Maynard, Will Murray, Duane Spurlock, and many others have read excerpts from their work, showcasing a wide range of exciting new fiction. Afterward, they’ve talked with their audiences, answering questions, fielding comments, discussing works-in-progress, and selling their books. Both our writers and their audiences have loved these events.

We call these fifty-minute (or less) sessions our “New Fictioneers” readings and we’re hoping to have some great ones at PulpFest 2016. As we have for the last seven years, PulpFest is seeking writers for its New Fictioneers program, scheduled for Friday, July 22nd, and Saturday, July 23rd. If you’re a writer of contemporary genre fiction who would like to participate in our 2016 festivities, please send an email to PulpFest committee member Chuck Welch at chuck@pulpfest.comChuck is looking for at least four writers to present their work at our 2016 convention. Tell him the kind of stuff you write, where you’ve been published, when you’d be available for a reading, and anything else that would help you to become one of our celebrated New Fictioneers.

In order to give the convention time to prepare its marketing of the 2016 New Fictioneers, all reader applications for PulpFest 2016 must be submitted by May 1, 2016. Space is limited — only a select number of readers will be chosen for the 2016 convention. If you’re writing contemporary genre fiction — detective, fantasy, pulp hero, science fiction, western, and so on — Chuck Welch is looking forward to hearing from you.

Weird Tales 52-01PulpFest 2015 enters it second day, following a successful night of dealer set-up, early registration, early-bird shopping, and a full slate of exciting programming. If you missed our first day, there’s still plenty of action to come.

From 9 to 10 AM today, the dealers’ room will be open only to dealers for set-up. All members will also be able to register for the convention this morning, beginning at 9 PM, and at any time during regular dealers’ room hours. Those who have prepaid for their memberships, will be able to pick up their registration packets at our door. Three-day memberships will be available for $40. Single day memberships will be available for $20 for Friday or Saturday and $10 for Sunday. Children who are fifteen and younger and accompanied by a parent, will be admitted free of charge. Our afternoon programming will start at 1 PM with the first of two New Fictioneers readings — by Jason Scott Aiken and John Hegenberger — followed by a presentation on the Pulp Magazines Project. Our evening programming will begin at 7 PM as PulpFest chairman Jack Cullers offers an official welcome to all attendees. Friday night’s programming will include a discussion of Standard Magazines’ managing editor, Leo Margulies, featuring Philip Sherman, the nephew of the “Little Giant of the Pulps.” Our guest-of-honor, author Chet Williamson, will discuss his career and explain how “the old gentleman” of Providence influenced him in his writing as well as the writing of his peers in the world of modern horror fiction. Our special guest, Jon Arfstrom, the last of the artists who painted covers for the original run of WEIRD TALESwill also talk briefly with pulp art historian David Saunders. We’ll also have our friends from FarmerCon X on hand for a discussion of the weird tales of Philip José Farmer, while a panel of popular culture historians will discuss the development of the Cthulhu or Lovecraft Mythos. Our final panel, Thrilling Heroes of Standard’s Pulps and Comics will feature pulp and comic book scholars Matt Moring, Will Murray, Michelle Nolan, and Garyn Roberts. We’ll close the night with a showing of THE CALL OF CTHULHU and COOL AIR, part of our Lovecraft at the Movies film series.

For pulp fans who like games, gaming fans who like pulps, or just people who like to have fun, PulpFest 2015 will be introducing a gaming track. Many of the themes found in the world of modern games resonate from the pulps and the stories published in those magazines. There are games based on Conan, the Cthulhu Mythos, space operas such as Doc Smith’s Lensman series, westerns, mysteries and, of course, the pulp heroes. Role-playing games, or RPGs, are especially noted for quick action, cliff-hangers, and adventure.

The PulpFest 2015 gaming track will begin at 10 AM on Friday and Saturday and last until 10 PM or thereabouts.  On Sunday, games will begin at 10 AM and continue until the end of the convention. All games will be set up in the Clark Room, located on the second floor of the Hyatt Regency. The only requirements to play games at PulpFest 2015 are a PulpFest membership, your imagination, and a desire to have a good time. (Jon Arfstrom began to submit his work to the digest market around 1950. Soon, he was selling to a number of magazines, including Dorothy McIlwraith’s WEIRD TALES. Our guest of honor for PulpFest 2015, Chet Williamson, has been collecting pulps ever since he was in college. The first pulp he ever bought was the August 1935 WEIRD TALES – pictured here with front cover art by the incomparable Margaret Brundage.

In 1981, a wargame and role-playing-game publisher known as Chaosium released the first edition of CALL OF CTHULHU, a game developed by Sandy Peterson. It is is now in its seventh edition and is one of the role-playing games that will be featured during PulpFest‘s new gaming track.)

 

PulpFest Primer

2015 FlyerPulpFest 2015 will begin on Thursday, August 13th, at 4 PM, as our dealers begin to erect their displays for “Summer’s Great Pulp Con!” All members will be able to register for the convention from 4 to 8 PM, right outside our dealers’ room. There will be early-bird shopping in the dealers’ room from 6 to 10 PM for loyal attendees who help to defray the convention’s costs by staying three nights at our host hotel. The cost is $30 for those who stay elsewhere. Our full programming slate for the evening will begin at 8 PM with a rapid-fire presentation on Walter Gibson’s use of real-world counterintelligence and espionage secrets in his Shadow novels. There will also be presentations on the detective and western heroes of the “Thrilling Group,” Street & Smith Comics, and sports pulps. Closing out the night will be a showing of OUT OF MIND: THE STORIES OF H. P. LOVECRAFT, one of the most admired films to be inspired by the master of the cosmic terror tale. We will also be featuring “Pickman’s Model,” a short film made for ROD SERLING’S NIGHT GALLERY and based on the Lovecraft work of the same title.

Startling Comics 48-01From 4 PM to 11 PM on Thursday, the dealers’ room will be open for exhibitors to set up their displays. At this point, we urge all of our dealers to take full advantage of our generous load-in and set-up period. While unloading and transporting your goods should be very easy – there’s a back entrance to the hotel for loading and we have been granted exclusive use of a freight elevator – there is bound to be a certain amount of disorientation as folks negotiate their way around the Hyatt. Remember that we’ll also be offering early-bird shopping in the dealers’ room from 6 to 10 PM on Thursday evening, an extra four hours of selling opportunities to people who are ready to buy!

Although the focus of PulpFest is pulp magazines and related materials, digests, vintage paperbacks, men’s adventure and true crime magazines, first-edition hardcovers, series books, dime novels, original art, Big Little Books, B-movies, serials and related paper collectibles, old-time-radio shows, and Golden and Silver Age as well as pulp-related comic books and games are also allowed. Please remember that PulpFest is not a comic book convention. Sexually explicit material, including Playboy, Penthouse and Oui, is not allowed.

This should allow plenty of time for people to prepare for our Saturday Night Dinner at Buca di Beppo, a get-together arranged by registration and volunteer coordinator Sally Cullers. Air War 1944-SummerOur Saturday afternoon programming will start at 12:30 PM when author Duane Spurlock will read from AIRSHIP HUNTERS and FIGHTING ALASKA. Afterward, Ron Fortier will moderate a New Pulp Fiction Panel on “The Heirs of WEIRD TALES.” It will be followed by a presentation on WEIRD TALES artist Lee Brown Coye and another New Fictioneer reading featuring the weird poetry and prose of Scott Urban. Saturday evening’s events will include the PulpFest 2015 Business Meeting beginning at 7:10 PM, where two lucky members who had booked a stay at the Hyatt Regency will receive full membership refunds. It will be followed by the 2015 Munsey Award Presentation. Our programming for the evening will include Weird Editing at “The Unique Magazine,” The Thrilling Adventures of Rudolph Belarski, and a showing of THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS and PROFESSOR PEABODY’S LAST LECTURE, part of our Lovecraft at the Movies film series. Tucked in before our movies start will be our Saturday Night Auction, featuring material consigned by our membership.

Any member of PulpFest 2015 can submit items to the auction. Your PulpFest badge number will be used as your auction bidder and/or seller number. We will begin taking consignments for the auction when our dealers’ room opens on Friday, August 14th. The sooner you submit your consignment to Mike Chomko, the more likely that it will be included in our auction. Mike’s tables will be along the wall, just inside the entrance to the PulpFest dealers’ room. All auction lots must be submitted to Mike prior to 2 PM, Saturday, August 15th. All lots submitted must have a minimum value of $20. All lots that do not receive a bid of $20 or more will be passed. If you plan to offer an auction lot with a reserve price, your reserve must be $50 or more. No lots with a reserve price of less than $50 will be accepted. PulpFest reserves the right to reject any auction material that is unlikely to meet our minimum bid or reserve price standards as well as our content standards. The convention charges sellers 10% of the selling price for anything sold in the auction. The Hyatt Regency is located at 350 North High Street in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The hotel is south of I-670, just 15-20 minutes from Columbus International Airport. In the heart of the active Arena District, the Hyatt Regency is just a few minutes’ walk from the trendy Short North Arts District. For those who will be staying at the Hyatt Regency during the convention, parking is free at the Chestnut Street Garage, one block south of the hotel. The garage is connected to the hotel via an enclosed and covered walkway. For those visiting PulpFest for the day, you can also use the Chestnut Street Garage. Rates vary based on time, but $16 will get you a day’s parking with in and out privileges. Additional parking is available at the Convention Center underground garage or the Center’s east lot. For those attendees who would like to ship their purchases to their homes, PulpFest 2015 has arranged for a local UPS provider to be available at the hotel on Sunday, August 16th. American painter, illustrator, graphic designer, web designer, poster artist and painter of book jackets, comic books, games and pin-ups Lee Moyer has created many Lovecraftian works of art, including the film poster for THE CALL OF CTHULHU, produced by the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society in 2005.

Besides RPGs, there will be a number of board and card games that will be demonstrated and played at the convention. These games can last from twenty minutes to several hours. One board game that will be featured during PulpFest‘s new gaming track will be Fantasy Flight’s ARKHAM HORROR.

The first issue of THRILLING SPORTS was dated September 1936 and featured “The Hurdling Hurricane,” credited to Arthur William Rickard, as its cover story. The cover art for the issue was by Earle K. Bergey, who, along with Rudolph Belarski, created many cover paintings for Standard’s sports pulps.)

PulpFest and the New Fictioneers

World War CthulhuIt’s called new pulp–stories by modern writers who recreate the style of fiction that appeared in the pulp magazines of yore. Back then, the authors who labored for the rough paper industry liked to call themselves scribes, word-slingers, penny-a-worders, and, perhaps the most favored term of all, fictioneers. Join PulpFest as we celebrate today’s fictioneers—the authors writing the new pulp fiction.

If you’re a writer who has been inspired by the work of yarn-spinners such as Raymond Chandler, Lester Dent, Frederick Faust, Walter B. Gibson, Edmond Hamilton, Robert E. Howard, H. Bedford-Jones, Henry Kuttner, H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and countless others who churned out commercial fiction for the pulp market, PulpFest is looking for you!

Every year since 2009, we’ve featured readings by some of the best writers of today’s pulp fiction. Jim Beard, Christopher Paul Carey, Win Scott Eckert, Ron Fortier, William Patrick Maynard, Will Murray, and many others have read excerpts from their work, showcasing a wide range of exciting new fiction. Afterward, they’ve talked with their audiences, answering questions, fielding comments, discussing works-in-progress, and selling their books. Both our writers and their audiences have loved these sessions.

We call these hour-long events our “New Fictioneers” readings and we’re hoping to have some great ones at PulpFest 2015. As we have for the last six years, PulpFest is seeking writers for its New Fictioneers program, scheduled for Friday, August 14th, and Saturday, August 15th. If you’re a writer of contemporary genre fiction who would like to participate in this year’s festivities, please send an email to PulpFest marketing and programming director Mike Chomko at mike@pulpfest.comLet him know that you’d like to be one of our celebrated New Fictioneers. Mike is seeking four writers to present their fiction at this year’s convention.

In the past, we’ve selected our readers on a first-come, first-served basis. This year, given our dual themes celebrating H. P. Lovecraft and WEIRD TALES and the Thrilling Group of pulp magazines, we’re going to try something different. Although the sooner writers apply to be our 2015 New Fictioneers, the better, priority will be given to those creators who have written fiction inspired by the work of Lovecraft, the Cthulhu Mythos, WEIRD TALES and such writers as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, and Seabury Quinn, or the pulp offerings of Standard Magazines–the Black Bat, Captain Future, the GhostLone EagleMasked Rider, Phantom Detective, and so on. Since PulpFest 2015 will also be exploring Standard Comics--also known as Better Publications and Nedor Publishing–creators of works featuring such characters as the Black Terror, Doc StrangeFighting Yank, Kara the Jungle PrincessMiss Masque, and Pyroman will also be given priority. However, all new-pulp or writers of supernatural fiction are welcome to apply.

In order to give the convention time to prepare its marketing of this year’s New Fictioneers, all reader applications for PulpFest 2015 need to be submitted by June 1, 2015. Space is limited–only four readers will be selected for this year’s convention. If you’re writing contemporary genre fiction, we look forward to hearing from you.
