Highlights from THE PULPSTER

THE PULPSTER returns with a hardboiled and dangerous 26th issue at PulpFest 2017. As usual, it’s packed with a variety of interesting articles pertaining to the pulp magazines.

The articles are in hand, the advertising is coming in, and assistant editor Peter Chomko and editor William Lampkin are editing the copy, and assembly of the magazine has begun. So now seems like a good time for a tease of what will be jam-packed into the issue.

Number 26 will offer a number of articles that tie into two of the themes of this summer’s pulp convention: dangerous dames and psychos.

Authors and pulp historians Ron Goulart and Bill Pronzini each write about those dangerous dames. Goulart’s piece looks at the few female detectives from the pulps, while Pronzini examines the women authors whose fiction could be found on the pages of the detective pulps.

As for the psychos angle, how about author Robert Bloch? He’s best known these days for writing the 1959 novel that Alfred Hitchcock based his classic movie, PSYCHO, on. But before that, Bloch got his professional writing start in the pulp magazines. His first sale was made to WEIRD TALES, naturally. Professor Garyn Roberts profiles Bloch, and looks at the novel PSYCHO.

Tony Davis, editor emeritus of THE PULPSTER, writes about horror author and poet Mary Elizabeth Counselman, whom he corresponded with during the late 1970s and early ’80s.

In addition to articles about the pulps and their creators, THE PULPSTER will also feature an article by Curt Phillips offering tips on preserving your collection of the aging pulpwood magazines, and articles on DETECTIVE FICTION WEEKLY.

Rounding out the issue, are columns by editor Lampkin, publisher Michael Chomko, and “Final Chapters,” in which editor emeritus Davis remembers those of the pulp community who have recently passed away.

A longstanding tradition cherished by attendees of summer pulp cons, THE PULPSTER #26 will be released at PulpFest 2017. It may seem as if PulpFest 2016 is barely over, but it’s not too early for us to start thinking about PulpFest 2017 and the next issue of THE PULPSTER.

Sunday at PulpFest

Dime Detective 34-04-15PulpFest 2016 is drawing to a close, but there is still time to get in on the action. The dealers’ room will be open from 10 AM until 2 PM today. With most of our dealers getting ready to head for home, our admission for the day is only $10, which includes a copy of our highly collectible program book, THE PULPSTER. Children who are fifteen and younger and accompanied by a parent, will be admitted free of charge. There are no programming events scheduled for Sunday.

Although our dealers’ room will be open, buying opportunities may be limited as most of our dealers will be packing up their displays, preparing for their trip home.

If you have not been able to attend PulpFest in 2016, start making your plans right now to join the 46th convening of “Summer’s Great Pulp Con” in 2017. Your PulpFest organizing committee is already starting to plan for next year’s convention. (One of the anniversaries celebrated by PulpFest 2016 was “A Century of Specialty Pulps.” Beginning with the October 5, 1915 issue of DETECTIVE STORY MAGAZINE, pulps devoted to a single theme or genre began to blossom on the newsstands across America. “While not the first of the specialized fiction magazines, being preceded by THE OCEAN and THE RAILROAD MAN’S MAGAZINE, it accomplished what they had not by creating a trend that would result in the proliferation of the pulps into western, love, air, science fiction, and supernatural, as well as detective.”

One of the most successful genre magazines was Popular Publications’ DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE. Among the publisher’s most popular magazines, it debuted in the fall of 1931 and ran for 274 issues. Advance Registrations End Monday

2016 Post CardIf you are not from the Columbus area and have yet to book your room for this year’s PulpFest, please do so without delay. Do not wait until you arrive, as PulpFest annually draws hundreds of fans and collectors of vintage popular fiction and related materials to Columbus, Ohio where it is currently based. PulpFest will be accepting advance registrations until 10 PM eastern time on Monday, July 18. We will be shutting down our Paypal Order page at that time. Through tomorrow evening, a four-day advance membership to PulpFest will cost you $30 — if you will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Columbus, a savings of ten dollars. If you are staying elsewhere, a four-day advance membership will cost you $35, a savings of five dollars over your price at the door. So please register now for PulpFest 2016.

If you’d like to take part in our early-bird shopping in the dealers’ room from 6 to 9 PM on Thursday, July 21, there’s an additional cost of $25 if you pay ahead of time. However, if you will be staying at the Hyatt-Regency Columbus for the three days of the convention, you will get free early-bird shopping. We do this to thank loyal attendees who help to defray the convention’s costs by staying at least three nights at our host hotel.

Early registration for PulpFest members will take place on Thursday, July 21, beginning at 4 PM right outside of the dealers’ room in Battelle South located across from the Regency Ballroom’s foyer in the Greater Columbus Convention Center. All members — dealers included — can pick up their registration packets at this time. To help things move smoothly, please bring along a completed registration form. You can download a copy by clicking the link on the registration page of our website. Early registration will end at 8 PM.

For those of you who choose not to register in advance for PulpFest 2016, Thursday evening will be an ideal time to do so. Four-day memberships will be available for $40. The early-bird shopping option will cost an additional $30 at the door. It’s free to those members who will be staying at the Hyatt. Single-day memberships costing $20 for Friday or Saturday will also be available. A Sunday-only membership, available only at the door, will cost $10. Be aware that many dealers will be packing up on Sunday and buying and selling opportunities may be limited. Members will also be able to register for the convention on Friday morning, beginning at 9 PM, and at any time during regular dealers’ room hours. Your membership allows entry to all convention activities including all of our evening programming and our Saturday gaming track. The Organizing Committee Grows

Amazing Stories 1943-09On this day when we salute the American worker, PulpFest is pleased to welcome its newest “laborers,” William Lampkin and Garyn G. Roberts, to its organizing committee.

William Lampkin, or Bill, has been reading fiction from the pulp magazines and collecting the magazines since the 1970s. He became involved in pulp fandom in the early 1990s when he discovered other like-minded individuals on the then-new Internet.

In 1996, he founded what later became ThePulp.Net, a website devoted to the pulps. The five-page website, which originated on AOL as .Pulp, has grown over the past two decades to include blogs, articles, histories, bibliographies, and more. He also writes the Yellowed Perils blog.

He attended his first pulp show in Tampa in the late 1990s, Pulpcon 35 in 2006, was actively involved with Doc Con from 2004 to 2011, and is on a two-year string of PulpFest appearances. In 2008, he became designer of THE PULPSTER. Bill assumed the editorship in 2013 when founding editor Tony Davis stepped down after 20 years.

Bill has been designing promotional material and advertising for PulpFest the past few years. His new role on the PulpFest organizing committee will be as director of advertising. He will also continue designing and editing THE PULPSTER. Why mess with a great thing?

Our other new committee member, Garyn Roberts, is an avid pulp collector and fan. He has written extensively about the pulps, both professionally and as a fan.

Garyn has edited or co-edited some of the best collections of stories from the pulp magazines, including A CENT A STORY: THE BEST FROM TEN DETECTIVE ACES, MORE TALES OF THE DEFECTIVE DETECTIVE IN THE PULPS, THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF THE MOON MAN, THE MAGICAL MYSTERIES OF DON DIAVOLO, and THE COMPLEAT GREAT MERLINI SAGA. His anthology, THE PRENTICE HALL ANTHOLOGY OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY, a college-level textbook, is notable for the attention paid to the pulp magazines.

In 2013, Garyn received the Munsey Award, which recognizes an individual who has given of himself or herself for the betterment of the pulp community, be it through disseminating knowledge about the pulps or through publishing or other efforts to preserve and to foster interest in the pulp magazines.

A long-time college professor, Garyn also taught a class in science fiction at Northwestern Michigan College.

In addition to pulps, he is an expert on the Dick Tracy comic strip, was a friend of creator Chester Gould, and has written DICK TRACY AND AMERICAN CULTURE: MORALITY AND MYTHOLOGY, TEXT AND CONTEXT. Garyn will help with the convention’s programming.

(Robert Gibson Jones, a native of Ohio, began to work as a commercial artist for a Chicago advertising agency during the First World War. Nearly thirty years later, his first pulp magazine cover appeared on the January 1943 issue of FANTASTIC ADVENTURES. According to pulp art scholar David Saunders, “He was soon painting many covers for this title as well as for AMAZING STORIES, MAMMOTH ADVENTURE, MAMMOTH DETECTIVE, and MAMMOTH WESTERN, all of which were produced in Chicago by the Ziff-Davis Publishing Company.” During the 1950s, Jones painted painted covers for OTHER WORLDS SCIENCE STORIES and UNIVERSE SCIENCE FICTION. His cover for the September 1943 is a wonderful depiction of the women who took on many non-traditional roles, helping with the war effort during the Second World War.)
