PulpFest

Friday at PulpFest 2019

PulpFest 2019 enters it second day, following a successful dealer set-up, early registration, early-bird shopping, and a full slate of programming. If you missed our first day, there’s still more to come.

From 9 to 10 AM today, the dealers’ room will be open only to dealers for set-up. All visitors will be able to register for the convention this morning — beginning at 9 PM — and at any time during regular dealers’ room hours.

All members — dealers included — will be able to register for the convention at the entrance to our dealers’ room. To help things move smoothly, please bring along a completed registration form. You can download a copy by clicking here or through the link found on our registration page. Paper forms will also be available at the door. The general public is welcome to attend.

A full-weekend advance membership to PulpFest will cost $40. Single day memberships for Friday or Saturday will be available for $20. A Sunday-only membership will cost $10. Children who are fifteen and younger and accompanied by a parent, will be admitted free of charge.

There is ample free parking surrounding our host hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry. The hotel is very conveniently located at the intersection of three major roadways in Cranberry Township. It’s just off the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate-79. The address is 910 Sheraton Drive, MarsPennsylvania. We have a map on our home page or click here for a link to a large map of the area.

The dealers’ room will open to all at 10 AM and will remain open until 4:45 PM. Located in the Grand Ballroom of the DoubleTree, our dealers’ room will feature exhibitors selling and trading pulp magazines and related materials, digests, vintage paperbacks, contemporary genre fiction and pulp reprints, men’s adventure and true crime magazines, first-edition hardcovers, series books, dime novels, original art, Big Little Books, B-movies, serials and related paper collectibles, old-time-radio shows, and Golden and Silver Age as well as pulp-related comic books and games. That’s why PulpFest is known as the “pop culture center of the universe!”

Our daytime programming will start at 11 AM with the Raw Dog Screaming Press Rapid-Fire Read & Sweet Sixteen Celebration. Coffee, tea, and sweets will be available, compliments of the publisher. Friday’s “New Fictioneers” readings will begin at 12:30 PM with Wayne Carey, author of QUATERMAIN: THE NEW ADVENTURES. He’ll be followed by Craig McDonald at 1:10, Joab Stieglitz at 1:50, and William Patrick Maynard at 3:10.

Our author signings will begin at 1:30 PM at the main entrance. John Locke, Will Murray, and Chet Williamson will be available to sign your books. We’ll also have a panel presentation on the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe, moderated by Christopher Paul Carey, the Director of Publishing for Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. “The Art of Edgar Rice Burroughs” — sponsored by the Burroughs Bibliophiles — will open at 2:30 PM. Closing out the afternoon will be an encore showing of our Fu Manchu Film Festival, presented by William Patrick Maynard, the licensed continuation author of the Fu Manchu thrillers.

The convention’s evening programming will begin shortly before 7 PM as PulpFest chairman Jack Cullers officially welcomes all our attendees. Afterward, we’ll have presentations on men’s adventure magazines, Sherlock Holmes, women pulp artists, Dashiell Hammett, and Rod Serling’s THE TWILIGHT ZONE. Closing out the night will be an authorized screening of Jason and Sunni Brock’s documentary, CHARLES BEAUMONT: THE SHORT LIFE OF TWILIGHT ZONE’S MAGIC MAN.

You can find additional details about all of our programming by clicking the button found at the top of our home page. Or click here to link to our 2019 mobile schedule. Each event on the schedule is linked to a post that provides further information on that event. Just click on the event’s title. Watch for the “panels” banner to find our programming area at the convention.

When our programming is over, PulpFest members are also welcome to socialize together in our hospitality suite at the DoubleTree. You’ll be able to enjoy drinks and snacks with your comrades in collecting and talk about the things that you love and collect. Perhaps you’ll even clear up some of the great mysteries of the pulps with your pals — both old and new — at PulpFest 2019. You sure can’t do that on your smart phone!

If you are not from the Pittsburgh area and have yet to book your room for this year’s PulpFest, you can try calling 1-800-222-8733 to reach our host hotel. Perhaps there is an opening. Please be sure to mention PulpFest in order to receive any special convention deals that may still be available.

PulpFest 2019 will continue on Saturday and Sunday. It concludes at 2 PM on Sunday, August 18. Please join us at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania for “Summer’s AMAZING Pulp Con!” You’ll have a FANTASTIC time!

(Almost ten years after killing Holmes off at the Reichenbach Falls, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brought his character back in “The Adventure of the Empty House.” The story would appear first in the September 26, 1903 number of COLLIER’S, featuring a cover illustration by Frederic Dorr Steele.)

Why not come to the DoubleTree for summer’s Pulp Con? It’s elementary! Our complete schedule for Friday, August 16, is below. If you’d like to access our schedule via your mobile phone or tablet, go to http://pulpcon.org/schedule/.)
