Flattening the Curve with Meteor House

Apr 8, 2020 by

As those of you who have attended PulpFest over the years know, one of its strongest backers has been Meteor House. From running full-page ads in THE PULPSTER to helping sponsor the hospitality suite and the PulpFest welcome banner, Meteor House has been there for the convention.

They’ve been joining PulpFest every year since 2011. That’s when they helped to bring FarmerCon VI to Columbus, Ohio and the PulpFest community. So PulpFest is honored to give Meteor House this opportunity to tell how they are trying to help out during these dark days.

One of the things we love here at Meteor House is the opportunity to allow other writers to create new stories based in Philip José Farmer‘s worlds. Here we spotlight MAN OF WAR: A TWO HAWKS ADVENTURE, written by the very talented Heidi Ruby Miller. We’ve included a link to her website here, but do us a favor and order the MAN OF WAR ebook before you go down that rabbit hole!

In Philip José Farmer’s novel, TWO HAWKS FROM EARTH, Native American pilot Roger Two Hawks flew through his first “gate” while on a bombing run over Romania during World War II. The gate brought him to Earth 2, a world where the Americas never existed. Since then he has continued to fight battles on Earth after Earth, each stranger than the last.

In Heidi Ruby Miller’s short story “Dakota’s Gate” (WORLDS OF PHILIP JOSÉ FARMER 3 and included in MAN OF WAR as a prelude), set on Earth 3, North America never advanced past stone tools and rock shelters. But that’s where Two Hawks met another gate traveler, Dakota Cummings. It was Dakota, a woman turned friend and lover, who pulled him through a gate to her Earth, the most alien and deadly of all.

Earth 4. Two hundred years in the future. A war thirty-six thousand feet underwater. Two Hawks must draw upon all he’s learned during his gate travels in order to survive war between technologically advanced humans and their far-future hybrid cousins. This time more than just his and Dakota’s lives are at stake — the fate of an entire world is in his hands.

Heidi’s short novel is one of many ways to get through these hard times. As of April 5, 2020, more than 300 million people in 41 U. S. states are under stay-at-home orders. And more of our loyal readers around the world are under similar conditions.

During these difficult days — literally unprecedented in our lifetimes — we at Meteor House want to do what little we can to help flatten the curve. We and our families are all self-isolating in our homes, doing our part to protect not only ourselves, but also the vulnerable — and we know our readers are also doing the right thing.

It’s not easy, for any of us. But please, continue to self-isolate and stay the course. As our thanks to you for doing your part, Meteor House has put all of our ebooks on sale, setting them to the minimum prices allowed by Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble NOOK.

All Meteor House novels, normally $4.99, are now only $2.99 — that’s 40% off! (Prices adjusted for local currencies in non-U. S. locations.)

All novellas, normally $3.99 are now also only $2.99 — that’s 25% off! (Prices adjusted for local currencies.)

We value each and every one of you, we thank you, and we hope this helps, in some small way, in these trying times.

(Mark Wheatley painted the cover for Heidi Ruby Miller’s MAN OF WAR, which debuted at PulpFest 2011 and FarmerCon VI. Like Meteor House before them, both Mark and Heidi have been very strong PulpFest supporters since its move to Pittsburgh, PA. We thank them and their families during these difficult days.)

Enter the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe

Jul 30, 2019 by

A century before the term “crossover” became a buzzword in popular culture, Edgar Rice Burroughs created the first expansive, fully cohesive literary universe. Coexisting in this vast cosmos was a pantheon of immortal heroes and heroines. In Burroughs’ eighty-plus novels, their epic adventures transported them to strange and exotic worlds, the lost civilizations of Earth, and even to realms beyond the farthest star. Now the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe expands in an all-new series of canonical novels written by today’s talented authors!

Join Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Director of Publishing Christopher Paul Carey for an exclusive first glimpse at the recently announced Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe series. The series represents the first time ERB, Inc., has declared official canon beyond the classic tales of wonder and imagination penned by Mr. Burroughs. Christopher will discuss the secrets of the newly expanding universe. He will be joined by several critically acclaimed authors who will be writing for the series. These include Matt Betts — who will be writing CARSON OF VENUS: THE EDGE OF ALL WORLDS — and Win Scott Eckert — who will be writing TARZAN: BATTLE FOR PELLUCIDAR. Heidi Ruby Miller — author of AMBASADORA: MARKED BY LIGHT and  MAN OF WAR: A TWO HAWKS ADVENTURE — will also be on hand with a special exclusive announcement.

The “Enter the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe” PulpFest panel will take place on Friday, August 16, beginning at 2:30 PM. It will take the place of our previously announced “New Fictioneers” reading by Christopher Paul Carey.

Heroines of Science Fiction and Fantasy — Part Two

Jul 9, 2019 by

Yesterday, we learned about the “Heroines of Science Fiction and Fantasy” from the past. Today, we’d like to discuss two PulpFest members who are among today’s “Heroines of Science Fiction and Fantasy.”

It goes without saying that we consider Sara Light-Waller one of our “Heroines of Science Fiction and Fantasy.” Sara is one of more than thirty fiction writers who will be attending PulpFest 2019. An avid reader of pulp science fiction stories, Sara writes and illustrates her fiction in the manner of the Golden Age science fiction from the 1930’s and 40’s. She is the author of ANCHOR: A STRANGE TALE OF TIME and LANDSCAPE OF DARKNESS. Published by Sara’s Lucina Press, they are both available through Amazon.

In 2018, we asked Sara if she’d be interested in writing posts about the first issues of SCIENCE WONDER STORIES and AIR WONDER STORIESShe quickly agreed and offered to write a third post about a subject dear to her heart: the women who helped to develop the science fiction genre. This time, it was our turn to immediately accept the offer.

Sara Light-Waller will be one of our “New Fictioneers” readers on Saturday, August 17, at PulpFest 2019.

Heidi Ruby Miller is our other PulpFest member who we consider to be among the “Heroines of Science Fiction and Fantasy.”

With degrees in Anthropology, Geography, Foreign Languages, and Writing, Heidi knew early that penning fast-paced, exotic adventures would be her life. One of the founders of Dog Star Books — the science fiction adventure imprint of Raw Dog Screaming Press — Heidi is the author of the AMBASADORA series and the Meteor House bestseller, MAN OF WAR. She also teaches creative writing at Seton Hill University, where she graduated from their renowned Writing Popular Fiction Graduate Program. Between writing and teaching, Heidi travels the world with her husband, writer Jason Jack Miller.

Earlier this year, Heidi represented PulpFest in a documentary produced by WQED Pittsburgh concerning pulp artist Gloria Stoll Karn. It’s part of a documentary entitled VISIBLE that aired on WQED, the nation’s first community-supported television station.

Heidi has also penned an article called “New Pulp” for the July 2019 issue of THE WRITER. Based on a class she taught in Seton Hill University’s Writing Popular Fiction MFA program, it concerns the resurgence of this popular fiction genre. The issue is currently available through bookstores and finer newsstands.

A resident of Pittsburgh, Heidi will be part of the Dog Star Books portion of the Raw Dog Screaming Press Rapid-Fire Read and Sweet Sixteen Celebration on Saturday, August 17. She’ll also be hosting our “Popular Fiction from Seton Hill” presentation immediately prior to the Dog Star Celebration on Saturday morning.

Be sure to have the opportunity to meet these two contemporary “Heroines of Science Fiction and Fantasy” by registering for PulpFest 2019 today. You can join the convention by clicking the Register button below our home page banner. If you’d like to pay for your membership via Paypal, you’ll find our Paypal link on our registration page.

If you are not from the Pittsburgh area and have yet to book your room for this year’s PulpFest, you can book your room directly through the PulpFest website. Below our banner, you’ll find a link that reads “Book a Room.” Click on this link and you’ll be redirected to a secure site where you can book a room at the DoubleTree. You can also reserve a room by calling 1-800-222-8733. Please be sure to mention PulpFest in order to receive the special rate. Thanks so much to everyone who has reserved a room at our host hotel. By staying at the DoubleTree, you’ve helped to ensure the convention’s success.

(The daughter of a playwright and a painter, is it any wonder that Sara Light-Waller became both writer and illustrator? Pictured here is the cover art for her first “scientifiction” adventure story, LANDSCAPE OF DARKNESS, published by Lucina Press in 2017. To learn more about Sara and her work, please visit her Facebook page, Twitter feed, or her Instagram site.)

Dog Star Books Rapid-Fire Read & Popular Fiction from Seton Hill

May 9, 2019 by

PulpFest is proud that over 30 popular fiction writers will be attending our 2019 convention. “Back in the day,” the authors who labored for the rough paper industry liked to call themselves scribes, word-slingers, penny-a-worders, and, perhaps the most favored term of all, fictioneers. Join PulpFest as we celebrate today’s fictioneers — the authors writing today’s pulp fiction!

On Saturday, August 17, at 11 AM, join six writers from Dog Star Books for a second Rapid-Fire Read for PulpFest. It will be hosted by publisher John Edward Lawson. Dog Star Books is the new Raw Dog Screaming Press imprint for Science Fiction Adventure titles. It is the specialty house for edgy, evocative, thought-provoking sci-fi and adventure fiction from new and established authors who shine among the best in their field today.

Readings on Saturday morning will be given by author and poet Matt Betts; editor and author J. L. Gribble; Dog Star Books founder/managing editor and science fiction and thriller author Heidi Ruby Miller; science fiction and urban fantasy author K. W. Taylor; science fiction author and poet Albert Wendland; and science fiction author, editor, and poet K. Ceres Wright.

Coffee, tea, and sweets — celebrating sixteen years of high quality Raw Dog fiction — will also be available, compliments of the publisher.

We’ll also be showcasing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill prior to the Dog Star Celebration. Join Dog Star Books founder and author Heidi Ruby Miller and three writers from Seton Hill University’s Writing Popular Fiction Master’s Program at 10 AM Saturday morning, August 17th at PulpFest in the convention’s programming hall. Horror and fantasy author Jeremiah Dylan Cook; author and screenwriter E. C. Skowronski,; and horror author, poet, and editor Sara Tantlinger will be reading from their work.

Meet the authors of science fiction that “goes for the throat” Saturday morning, August 17, at PulpFest and see if their Rapid-Fire Read doesn’t set you aflame and leave you barking for more.

PulpFest 2019 will begin on Thursday, August 15, and run through Sunday, August 18.  Join PulpFest at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry, just north of Pennsylvania’s “Steel City” of Pittsburgh. We’ll be celebrating “Children of the Pulps and Other Stories” at this year’s gathering. Click our Programming button below our homepage banner to get a preview of all the great presentations at this year’s event.
